With this Volume I begin a project I have thought about for twenty years, the adaptation in modern terms of some of the major works of 19-th century differential geometry and Lie group theory. It is Certainly most appropriate to begill with Lie whose ideas dominate. this period and who was one of the most, brilliant and imaginative mathemanticlans of all time. In translating Lie in this way I have more in mind than historical piety. Among all the 19-th century masters, Lie's work is in detail certainly the least known today. Many of this ideas and problems have hardly been touched since his death.
